Memorial Day

Just want to thank all of those who currently serve and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.  I can't think of a single more unselfish profession.  God Bless the USA!

Couch 2 5K: Week 2

Ok, so I have completed Week 2 of the C25K program....sorta.  See, in my last post I mentioned that I got through part of Week 2 and then got bronchitis....so this week was my do over week.  Well this week, much crappy weather got in the way of being able to run as much as I wanted, so I only was able to get in 2 runs.  However, b/c I did one before I got bronchitis, I am cheating a little and saying that I finished Week 2.  At least I'm being honest w/ the Internet world and saying that I'm cheating, but there are a few reasons for it.

One, I wasn't struggling at all to finish the 90 seconds.  I felt good about it and felt that I could've gone a little further each time.  Two, I would've actually finished this week by running tomorrow night too, but they have already issued a heat advisory starting tomorrow at noon and lasting through the night until Tuesday night.  The actual temperatures are supposed to be upper 90's, breaking 100 on Tuesday and heat indices in the 105's......therefore, I will not be running.  I'm not hardcore like that....at all.  I ran tonight when it was in the 80's and I thought I was pretty badass.  Anyway, thirdly, I don't want to do Week 2 AGAIN, for the 3rd time, because I honestly do think I can handle Week 3.  So, I guess we'll see.  And if I'm wrong, I will gladly go back to Week 2 and if this takes me all damn summer, than so be it.

One thing I do want to mention if you are interested at all in doing this- I found a running podcast on iTunes.  Apparently, there are many, but I just came across a pretty popular one and have used it.  The idea is that it tells you when to run/walk with a voice prompt and you don't have to check any kind of device for time, which is KEY for me.  When I used to do this at the gym, I would constantly stare at the clock on the treadmill and it would drive me nuts and this time I was trying to stare at my cell phone while I ran down the street.  This way, I have NOTHING to look at and just run until they tell me to stop.  It's a good thing for me.  Maybe not for others.  The one thing I will say is that on this particular podcast,  the music sucks.  But again, it's worth it to me because of the voice prompts.  I have heard it's not hard to make one of your own as far as putting in voice prompts, but I personally don't have the time for that right now.  Hell, I barely have the time to run!  So, there you have it....Week 2- check!

I will be beginning Week 3 hopefully Wednesday evening.  Wish me luck, since I'm a cheater!

He Kissed A Girl....

Happy Memorial Day Friday!

Our computer is still down so no pics from the beach last weekend, although I am dying to post them.  Some are so stinkin' cute.  For now, only a quick story about Gage's 1st kiss.  Yesterday at school the kids were playing Ring Around the Rosie and they were trying to get Gage and a little girl named Katie to hold hands for the game.  As they were positioning them, Katie leaned forward and gave Gage a little peck.  Gage was taken aback at first and wasn't sure how to respond.  But w/o further ado, he took her little face in hands and planted a big wet one on her!  And in true girl fashion, she pushed him down!  haha....the teachers said it was hysterical and that he wouldn't take no for an answer.  He proceeded to follow her around and try to hold her hand the rest of the day.....ha.  That's my boy!  Somehow it won't be as funny in a few years, but nevertheless.  Hope you all have a wonderful weekend and don't get stuck in too much traffic.  Hopefully we'll get some pictures up and running sometime this weekend and I can update you on my Couch 2 5K.

No Wordless Wednesday for me...

The computer has crashed yet again and all of my pictures/videos b/w Feb. and April are gone:(  When will I ever learn to back stuff up once a month?  Who knows?  When will I ever learn to suck it up and buy a new computer....mine is clearly a POS.....

Who knows when I'll be up and running??

Couch 2 5k Running Program

This was a program that I began back in Jan/February of 2009.  I was going to finally 'learn' to run.  Now don't get me wrong, I didn't think I was going to run in a marathon or anything, but I did want a sense of accomplishment in training for something and finishing it....so I set my sights low....on a 5k.  It was fine, it was going to be enough for me and I was excited to see how I could progress from being able to not run at all, to actually running a few miles at a time.  Plus, running is quick exercise that keeps you in good shape AND you can do it anywhere and not have to have a membership to a gym.  In Feb. of 2009, I did have a gym membership and liked to change up my routine frequently as not to get bored and since it was cold outside I used their treadmills to begin my Couch25K.

Anyway, fast forward a month later...I found out I was pregnant and never ran again....ha.  I know, I know, I didn't have to quit altogether, but I mean starting a new fitness program/routine isn't exactly the best choice when you just find out you are having a baby.  So needless to say, there went my Couch25K....I was up to running 2 miles alone, so I always said I'd return one day.

Today is the day.........or rather a few weeks back was the day.  As much as I have wanted to, I have not worked out since March of 2009 when I first found out I was pregnant.  I mean, I have taken Gage on plenty of walks, etc., but never have I truly worked out for myself again.  I have said- when he's 6 months, when he's a year, etc....but, there's always something else to do and I have found it really hard.  Even after he goes to bed, which is early, there's always something to do around the house, rather than work out.  Anyway, enough of my rambling....I AM BACK.  hah...Heather over at Life with the Ardies (can we say cutest kid ever??) mentioned something in her blog that she wanted to begin a running program and was looking for some support.......I gladly stepped up to the plate and thought that with the 2 of us motivating each other, we were bound to succeed!

I got through the 1st week easily and was about to get into the 2nd week when I got bronchitis....so I am actually beginning Week 2 over again starting tomorrow.  I figure if it takes me longer than the 9 weeks it's supposed to, that's ok, I just want to reach the goal.  So....here I am- I have committed now to the Internet world to get this thing  going, so let's hope it works out!  Heather is already on Week 3, so I'm a little behind, but again, as long as I finish....

Now, I know some of you, 'runners' are laughing at me because I'm trying to 'train' for a 5k....but I'm telling you, running has never been my thing so it's still a pretty big deal for me.  Wish me luck!  Or at least wish that I'll get off my butt and get back into some kind of exercise program!  (Other than Billy Blanks on OnDemand!)

Anyone care to join?

18 month well check

Yesterday I took my little munchkin (literally) to the doc for his year and a half checkup.  I was a little nervous when making my question list b/c we won't visit again for a well check for 6 MORE MONTHS!  What?  You mean,  I have to figure out this terrible two's thing on my own??  Oh Lord...we'll see how that goes.  Anyway, the appointment went much better than the last when he got the dreaded MMR vaccine.  In any case, I didn't have too many concerns this time, so maybe that's why.  I did remember a few things after I left that I might email about.  Without further ado, Gage's 18 month stats are:

21lbs. 5oz. (5th %ile)
31 ins. (10th %ile)
head circumference in the 50th %ile!  woo hoo!

So yes, Gage is small and that's fine with us....what I am not fine with is the 12 mo. summer clothes that I bought him about a mo. ago that he can barely fit in now.  Somehow his belly and legs are growing exponentially.  We thought we had found a good fit in 12-18 mo. clothes from Old Navy and now realize we might be going back to 18 mo. Carters/Target....which is ok, b/c it's on the cheaper end.

Anyway, we discussed discipline a bit, the way he walks (bowlegged), his diet, getting rid of the Nuk, when to go to a toddler bed, etc.  Nothing out of the ordinary and she seemed pleased with him overall.  I'm a little nervous not getting advice from her for the next 6 months, but luckily she's available by email, so I'll try to limit it to only one 21 month email!  ha.  So our little man is doing fine and learning new things every day!  All in all, a 'well' check up this time...........if you don't count breaking down on the way home and having to pay $500 for a new alternator.....

18 months old! Unbelievable!

My sweet boy,

Again, another day late, but Mommy's been sick again- this time with bronchitis!  I should go to bed, even as I type, but I've got to write my right hand man a letter before the week gets too busy.  You were 18 months old yesterday and that is just plain nuts.  When I reread your 16 month letter, it seemed like I still writing to a baby.

Of course, by now you've been in the big boy classroom at school for almost 2 months and you have truly learned SO much since being there.  You already had great language skills and even since have had an explosion in language, now speaking in 2-3 word phrases at a time. It's amazing to hear the possessive's that you use (Daddy's hat, Mommy's coat, etc.)  Sometimes we wonder where in the heck you learned some of it- it seems that you are just that tuned in to our language. For instance, when we say, "Pick you up?", you say back to us, "Pick  me up."  How in the world can you know me instead of you or I?  You even say 'I want...', isntead of 'me want, etc'.  Pretty nutty.  We have learned that you have an incredible memory that surprises us all the time.  You also know all of your numbers except 1, 9 and 10 and can count from 2-10 alone!  My favorite thing you say right now is "Hi, Mommy" anytime I enter the room and "Bye Bye Mommy" when I leave you at school in the morning.  You also are starting to use 'please' appropriately.

Lately, you have been eating better and have even tried some hamburger and chicken at school.  This weekend you ate eggs and black beans for the first time and we even snuck some spinach into your cheese quesadilla.  You still love 'grilled cheese' and ask for it and 'applesawce' every time we put you in your high chair.  In your 16th month letter, I mentioned that you were getting your 5th tooth, but it never came.....until this month- you now have 6.  Last week you were up most every night saying 'teeth' and 'mouth', but we have yet to see any new teeth or molars.  You are finally outgrowing your 12 month clothes and seemed to have a little growth spurt in the last few weeks.  12-18 mo. clothes from Old Navy and Gap fit you best, but you can wear some 18 mos. elsewhere as well.   You have adjusted to your 1 nap a day at school finally, but still would rather it be earlier on weekends. You seem to fit in with your big boy class better than I could've imagined. Starting next week, you won't be the youngest anymore and a new baby starts her journey in the toddler classroom.  You still love to be outside and LOVE your wagon, swing and jogging stroller.  Inside your new favorite toys are your slide, your choo choo train and your pull back cars. Mommy plans to buy you some new big boy toys this summer;)  shh...don't tell Daddy!  When we are outside, you always have to have a piece of chalk in our hand and ask us repeatedtly if we will draw you kitties.  Speaking of kitties, you are starting to learn their names and tell them 'Night, night' every night before bed.

I can't believe there are only 4 more weeks before we get to spend each and every day together for 10 glorious weeks. We are going to have SO much fun. So far we have you signed up for Little Gym classes once a week and swim twice a week, I'm sure we'll hit the pool much more than that.  Mommy will also have to be creative and find some rainy day activities and some story groups, etc.  That reminds me, we have started taking trips to the library every few weeks and you love it there.  I hope that you will become more fond of the books as you get older and not want to just run around...ha.

We go to the dr. tomorrow and you only have to get one shot.  I'm excited to see how much you've grown and to find out what to expect the next 6 months.  Notable things we have planned before my next letter are trips to OBX, of course, saying goodbye to your classmates for the summer and family portraits (so excited).  I'm sure we'll find more trouble to get in just as soon as we're out of school for good.  Gage, we love love love you and are thankful every day for you.  You continue to amaze us (as I say in all my letters) and I am so lucky to be your Mommy.  You are my everything.

Love,
Mommy

P.S.  You say MoMMy now!

It's gone...

I have lost my momentum to writing a great post about my Mother's Day weekend....ha, that's what workin' will do to you.  I often have this problem...

I'll just say I got to sleep in on Mother's Day, which I am always grateful for, Daddy helped Gage color me a picture and I got to hang w/ my two favorite men, so that was good enough for me.  I also got to go shopping and got some pretty good deals at New York and Company.  I literally think my brain is fried since I had a few other comments to make, but can't even remember them now.

Oh yes, the other part of my Mother's Day gift that I had mentioned earlier in another post.  I told Luke months ago that all I wanted for Mother's Day was professional family pictures and not professional like Target/Picture People, but real pictures for more than likely a REAL price.  Anyway, I think I have found the photographer I'd like to work with and I'm pretty excited.  The pictures aren't for another 6 weeks, but that'll give me time to decide what I really want and where I really want them.

I don't think this week could creep by any slower. Tomorrow I get to have dinner with an old friend I haven't seen in a while though so that should be fun. And tonight I'll leave you w/ a few pictures of myself and my little man taken yesterday at his school.

This is the cute one, but you can't read his shirt.

Here's a better one of the shirt, but not of him.

ha...this is the little slide at school, but the angle makes it look huge!

P. S.  Remembered my other thought....I'm redecorating Gage's bathroom, monkey or dinosaurs?  Any opinions?

Tired...

I really want to post about my wonderful Mother's Day weekend- like you all have and let you know that my husband, too, is fabulous, but I am just so tired right now.  However, I do have to celebrate a small milestone with you all tonight.

At 17 mos., 3 weeks and 2 days, my little boy, said 'I love you' tonight!  My heart is melting...

What I've Been Up To...

I'm not very motivated to write- not sure I have any news to share, but since I haven't blogged in a while, I'll let you guys all know what I've been up to the last few days.

This week at school, really all month at school, is always crazy.  With SOL's (state tests, for those of you not in VA) looming, the pressure is on.  Working in a high school, kids' graduation depends on these very tests and being a math teacher make it even worse.  Typically, Geometry is the lowest score each year and can prevent our school from getting state recognized.  In addition to that, as you know I'm a special education teacher, so that in itself presents its own challenges.  So needless to say, I am drained at the end of every day and counting down the days 'til testing is over (1st week of June) when I can hopefully bask in my success!  I've been staying late at work so Gage and I usually only have about an hour of play time by the time I get home before dinnner.  It sucks, but it will be over soon and I know he loves his daycare so it makes me feel a little better.

In other news, this morning, Gage had his 1st experience with a babysitter!  Since Gage didn't know Shari, we decided that the 1st few times they hung out we'd be around just to make sure he was comfortable.  Gage doesn't usually have stranger anxiety but every now and then it happens and I'd hate to think I'd just leave him with someone he doesn't know and walk away.  But as soon as Shari got the wagon out, he was all hers.  Luke's and my project of the day was to clean out our garage.  You know, all of the boxes that we put there 3 years ago when we moved in and said we'd get to later.....well, now is later.  Anyway, we obviously couldn't do it with Gage running around so we figured it would be a good opportunity to get Shari on over so they could get comfortable with one another.  Mission accomplished:  You should see the pile of trash in our garage, in fact, I might take a picture of it before the night's over.  Funny thing is, today was our community yard sale and we clearly didn't get our garage cleaned out in time to sell anything, but there were TONS of cars driving by really slow watching our garage cleaning attempt and searching for our trash pile.  Anyway. Shari and Gage had fun, and Gage loved that she played outside with him for a whole 2.5 hours!

After our cleaning fit was over, Luke took me to Bed Bath and Beyond to buy me a Keurig I have been eyeing!  I'm pretty excited about my Mother's Day gift, although I asked for something else;)  (More on that later.)

Finally, I'd like to wish my my Mom a very Happy Mother's Day tomorrow!  I think she's probably at the beach house enjoying the beautiful weather, so I'm sure she's not complaining.  Anyway, thanks for everything,, I love you and I'll talk to you tomorrow!

Celebrations All Around!

This past weekend I went home to my parents' house to visit. Although it had been quite a while since Gage had seen his Grandparents, the real reason I went was to celebrate my very best friend from high school having her 1st baby in July!  I am so excited for her and her husband and had a really nice time celebrating with her at her shower and just catching up in general.  As you can see from the picture, she looks great to be 7 months along!

Me and Kelly, April 30, 2011

Gage also got to spend time with his Nana, Granddiddy and Auntie, so all in all it was a good weekend.

Then came Sunday, when the events of 9/11 came full circle and Osama bin Laden was killed!  A man who had caused such great pain and hardship to our country was finally located and murdered after 10 years!  September 11, 2011 is still fresh in my mind 10 years later, and fortunately, not because I knew any victims, but just because I think it was one of the 1st defining moments for our country in my 'adult' years that I can recall.  Regardless, I think his death is good closure for all those affected and for all citizens in general.  Thank you to all who serve and have served in our country's military and risk your lives so that we may live our lives to our discretion!  And man, can you imagine being in that Navy Seals group?  Wow...is all I can say!

Also, today one of my best friends and Matron of Honor in my wedding welcomed her third child, but first daughter into the world!  Baby Estelle was born this afternoon and I can already tell she will be spoiled rotten!  Her 2 big brothers don't know what is about to hit them.  Congratulations Malisa and John!

Another family friend's little girl turned 4 today!  Happy Birthday Evie, you're such a big girl now!

P.S.  I have no idea why these pictures look so crappy!
